El Centro

I just came back from el Centro Ca, where I, together with a team from the BACH or Center for Behavioral and Community Health Studies are doing focus groups with Latino families regarding exercise and eating habits. I'm the newest member of the team and today was my first day. Besides the novice factor, I had some really annoying technical difficulties with the recording gadgets that made it even more interesting. Guess that was my right of passage.

interesting that the location is el centro, out of all the different areas to choose from.

Being new to any field or activity is an experience, failures and mistakes are opportunities to learn for the future. I'm sure that you will quickly adapt to new demands and challenges.

Sounds interesting, hope to hear more about the research (as in the whole process) and of course the results. :)

I'm interested in hearing more about what you are studying specifically and how you are engaging people in this discussion (especially given that in El Centro folks probably have less time to set aside for exercise because they are working). I'd be interested to hear from older women/moms expecially, since there may be less opportunities for them to exercise informally like the men (eg the men may play futbol in informal leagues/teams, but there are often way less women participating in my experience). I also wonder if people are thrown off by having their interview recorded, and how you deal with that...

Any difficulties that get in your way will only add to the experiences that will help you succeed. I'm sure it will be a challenge to have them eat
less flour tortillas and more fruits & vegetables and play soccer instead of watching it on TV.. :)
Suerte pa'la próxima~

Studying the social groups based in their eating behavior is a very interesting topic. Many authors have used such resources to dissect important social issues. I'm interested in hearing more about the details and the end results!!!

Although, I am not familiar with "El Centro", I can only imagine that the social issues/dilemnas about healthy lifestyles are the same among most Latinos. As you are so interested in the environmental factors that influence people's health and wellness, I think you fit in well with this project. I am sure you will have much to offer them as they will offer insight to you. The technical difficulties were probably not really difficulties to you.Right? Buena suerte:)
